This is especially crucial for startups and early stage businesses looking to reaffirm their position in the market and expand their activities. Funding these ideas can be extremely challenging and entrepreneurs often exchange their equity for capital.
Informal Venture Capital examines individuals who put their personal funds into the businesses of others.

Business Angels
Business angels identify companies in their growth phase and provide the financial capital necessary for expansion in exchange for equity. These individuals are often knowledgeable businesspeople with the necessary financial investment and social capital needed to help the company to grow more quickly and efficiently.
This growing portion of the private sector provides an important source of informal capital but unfortunately is very hard to track despite the various organizations and business angels' networks, because many of these investors remain independent.
The Informal Venture Capital Measurement Project is designed to measure the amount of Informal Venture Capital activity taking place in Canada.

The Project
The Informal Venture Capital Measurement Project, headed by Dr. Ellen Farrell, is an academic research project that aims to provide a better understanding of what kind of capital is available for young or growing firms.
The Informal Venture Capital Measurement Project captures a snapshot of the types of equity finance for each of the different provinces and territories in Canada. The purpose of this research is to analyzes how Informal Venture Capital fluctuates, how it differs from province to province, and how Canadian entrepreneurs can attract more and better capital to expand their activities.
The nationwide project focuses on businesses created in Canada within the October 2008 and October 2009 period, and which received private investment from business angels. The challenge is to identify how many startups might have had access to the kind of financing.
